Agriculture is the main sector of the Guatemalan economy, accounting for about 26% of GDP, and Guatemala is also among the countries with the highest levels of native biodiversity. However, the legacy of 36 years of civil war is visible, with high levels of inequality and food insecurity, more than 50% of the population below the poverty line, and 13% struggle to get the necessary food to survive.
However, Guatemala has a huge potential for expanding its agricultural production.
