Challenges

70% of the population in Bangladesh depends on agriculture for their livelihood, and agriculture is the largest sector in the economy. Most of the country is less than six metres above sea level and is highly vulnerable to rising sea levels and natural disasters. Agricultural production, particularly of rice and wheat, has increased significantly in the past four decades since independence in 1971 and this has greatly improved food security.

But further increases in productivity and diversification are vital to meet the food needs of the growing population and to provide income-earning activities in rural areas.
