Strengthening the value chain and commercialisation of mango
Description
Mango is one of the important fruits of Bangladesh. In 2013-14 season total 85541 acres of land was under mango cultivation which was 25.18% of total fruit growing areas in the country. Due to its popularity mangoes are becoming a business commodity and commercial orchards are being established in different parts of the country mostly in Rajshahi, Chittagong Hill Tracts and Khulna region but Rajshahi alone produced almost 45% mangoes in 2013-14 growing season and exported31 MT to UK and some other ethnic markets. Lion share of Rajshahi’s mangoes are produced in Shibganj upazila of Chapai Nawabganj District.
Mango is an important cash crop in Chapainawabganj district. Shibganj Upazila contributes more than half to the production of mango in Chapainawabganj district, but producers are frustrated by limited market opportunities and want to establish a group to increase revenues. Eff orts will focus on improving links to traders, input suppliers and service providers through a stakeholder platform, and upgrading of functional capacities including skills in leadership, negotiation, analysing market information, and developing strategies to innovate.

Improving links between stakeholders through support of a mango platform, upgrading strategic and innovative capacities, increasing returns from mango cultivation and processing.
