Niche “Aquatic animals proteins from the rice field”
AQUATIC ANIMAL PROTEIN-RICE niche
Title
An integrated and agroecology ricefield system for better balancing smallholders’ protein diet
Description
Some farmers groups have developed an innovative ricefield farming system, which combines a rainfed rice production with an aquatic animal farming. This source of protein is both consumed by smallholders in order to better balance their own diet but also sold in national and foreign (Viet Nam, Chine, Cambodia) markets. This endogenous innovation is not well known; likewise the ways these stakeholders have developed a real marketing value chain. The farmers ask for support in order to increase both their production and their selling. Succeeding in increasing this protein production should be very useful at the national level to better balance the protein diet of smallholders.
In the last years, a lot of insights has been gained about the high protein quality of this aquatic animals (fish, frog, snails and insects) farming, thanks to a FAO project, and state services have been aware of the importance of this ricefield and aquatic animals farming system. Some Nafri and Pafo teams have assessed the quality and the diversity of products and have launched some support programs. We are now at the very exciting step to set out larger and sounder partnerships to develop a national value chain, for nutrition purpose, from this endogenous and local innovative practice.
Aim
Supporting the establishment of partnerships for developing a national value chain for the local innovative practice of aquatic animal protein in the rice field
